His interest in engineering began in secondary school, driven by a fascination with robotics, machines, and advanced technology. That curiosity eventually led him to pursue Mechanical Engineering at UTM, where he built a strong technical foundation in areas such as thermodynamics, fluid dynamics and solid mechanics.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n But for Shi Xian, university was not only about mastering equations and theories. His time at FKM also strengthened his analytical thinking, problem-solving skills and ability to approach engineering challenges systematically. Hands-on learning played an important role in preparing him for industry. For his Final Year Project, Shi Xian investigated journal bearing performance through experimental work and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation. The project gave him valuable experience connecting engineering theory with simulation, data, and real-world performance.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n .<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.6″ _module_preset=”default” min_height=”624.5px” custom_margin=”-39px|auto||auto||” custom_padding=”0px|||||” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.6″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.9″ _module_preset=”default” min_height=”305.9px” custom_margin=”-22px|||||” custom_padding=”15px||3px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n He also took part in a collaborative design project with Dyson, which exposed him to real-world engineering challenges and showed him how technical knowledge, design decisions, and teamwork come together in an industrial environment.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n Interestingly, the semiconductor industry was not originally part of his career plan. As developments in artificial intelligence, automation and emerging technologies continued to grow, Shi Xian became increasingly curious about the industries that enable them. This led him to explore semiconductor manufacturing, where he discovered that mechanical engineers play an important role in equipment performance, process optimization, troubleshooting, and data analysis.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n Today, he applies these skills at Micron.<\/span><\/p>\n As a Process and Equipment Engineer, Shi Xian analyses process data, investigates abnormalities, identifies root causes and works with engineers across different functions to develop practical solutions. Every improvement must also be carefully evaluated to ensure that product quality and manufacturing reliability are maintained. His transition from student to engineer has reinforced one important lesson: university provides the foundation, but industry teaches engineers how to apply that knowledge to real problems.<\/span><\/p>\n In the workplace, problems are often more complex than textbook exercises. They require engineers to ask the right questions, think critically, communicate clearly and continue learning as technologies evolve.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n For current FKM students, Shi Xian encourages them to look beyond examinations and assignments. Rather than focusing only on getting the correct answer, he believes students should understand why engineering solutions work and how to apply that knowledge in practice. He also advises graduating students to start preparing early for their careers. Shi Xian began updating his r\u00e9sum\u00e9, exploring possible career paths and practising interview skills during his final year. His early preparation paid off when he secured his offer from Micron Singapore around the beginning of his final semester.<\/span><\/p>\n \n His journey from FKM to Micron shows that a Mechanical Engineering degree can open doors far beyond traditional mechanical industries. From journal bearings and CFD simulations at UTM to advanced semiconductor manufacturing in Singapore, Shi Xian is now applying the fundamentals he learned at FKM in one of today\u2019s most dynamic technology sectors.
