ADVANCED TESTING OF LAMINATED COMPOSITES FOR AEROSPACE PARTS AND ASSEMBLIES

Innovative new generation aircraft spoiler featuring monolithic panels and integrated composite fittings is proposed. Such development calls for rigorous material characterization and quantification of the structural performance of the demonstrator spoiler. Standard test procedures would be employed for coupon testing of composite laminates, adhesive joints and selected alloys. Pre- and post-test examination would reveal inherent and processing-induced defects, and failure mechanisms of the materials. Measured properties and behavior will be employed in developing accurate FE models of the materials. Reliability of parts and sub-assemblies will be established through mechanical testing. Such reliability data is indispensable in assessing the design and validating the FE simulation models. Simplified, yet validated FE models will be developed for efficiency in predicting deformation response and reliability of the demonstrator spoiler. Measured response of the spoiler would provide the data for external validation of the simplified model.
