ABSTRACT
Fundamental Research and Innovations in Manufacturing
The U.S. still has one of the largest manufacturing sectors in the world, constituting about 20% of the total global output. It is strong in producing technology-intensive and innovation-driven products, but very weak in producing consumer goods. The problem is that the U.S. manufacturing base has been hollowed-out by globalization, enabled in part by rapid advances in communication and transportation, and in part by low labor costs—particularly in China. Since manufacturing activities have a knowledge multiplier effect as well as an economic multiplier effect, the U.S. has lost some of its competitive edge due to its diminishing manufacturing sector. Recently, this trend has been reversed due in part by low energy costs and relentless innovations in the US.
The MIT’s Laboratory for Manufacturing and Productivity was founded more than 30 years ago as an interdepartmental laboratory with the mission of exploring frontiers in manufacturing. Since its inception, its members have developed many innovative manufacturing processes such as 3D Printing, micro-cellular plastics and droplet-based manufacturing. In this presentation, I will present some examples of innovations in manufacturing enabled by fundamental research.
