Abstract
Functional Ceramic Coatings Using Advanced Plasma Technology

A high precise plasma system has been proposed for advanced thermal processing. The gas tunnel type plasma jet device developed by the author exhibits high energy density and also high efficiency. Among its various applications, one of the best applicability is the plasma spraying of ceramics such as Al2O3 and ZrO2. The performances of these ceramic coatings are superior to conventional ones. Here the properties such as the mechanical and chemical properties, thermal behavior and high temperature corrosion resistance of the alumina/zirconiacomposite coatingsare presented. The ZrO2 composite coating has a possibility for the development of high functionally graded thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). Another application of gas tunnel type plasma is for the surface modification of metals. For one example TiN films were formed in a short time of 5 s. And, the thick TiN coatings were easily obtained by gas tunnel type plasma reactive spraying. Moreover, other functional coatings will be also described in this talk.
